  • „Witnesses of the Witnesses“: The Holocaust Survivor in a Digital Age

    Dienstag, 07.07.2020 - 19:15 Uhr

Diese Veranstaltung muss kurzfristig entfallen.

Talk by Prof. Jackie Feldman. The 1980s and 1990s were named „The Age of the Witness“ by historian Annette Wieviorka. The physical presence of the aging witnesses, their facial expressions, stutterings, and silences, were seen as the ultimate authentication of „deep memory“. In the current generation, the Shoah is increasingly transmitted through digitalized media forms. Some of these forms, such as computergenerated conversations with holograms of survivors, personal objects in museums, and GPS-linked apps in European cities, seek to preserve not so much the narrative of the witnesses, but their physical presence. Jackie Feldman will analyze how changes in media affect the nature of Shoah memory and whether digital technology affects Shoah memory in the same way across cultures – say, in Israel and Germany.

Jackie Feldman is Professor of Anthropology at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. He lives in Jerusalem.
