Portland, OREGON

With its excellent parks, cultural facilities, transportation system, and its great cityscape, Portland is one of the finest cities in the US. As Oregon's economic and population center and gateway to the Pacific Rim, Portland offers unique opportunities for business, industry, government, and the university to enhance partnerships that promote economic, social, cultural and international development.

The Cascade Mountains rising to Portland's east offer monumental views from several of the city's high spots. And only 1.5 hours to the west you will enjoy the spectacular Oregon Coast shaped by the waves of the Pacific Ocean. Portland itself is a city characterized by small blocks, neat homes, colorful parks and intimate gardens. It is also called the called “the City of Roses”.

Portland State University is a comprehensive public university of growing distinction. The university has more than 24.000 enrolled students and serves nearly 40.000 individuals in credit or non-credit classes each year. Its campus is very centrally located in the heart of downtown Portland at the center of a dynamic community. The University's mission is to provide excellent programs in teaching, research, and public service in Oregon's major metropolitan area.

It is the goal of our two-week seminar to give you a unique behind-the scenes look at how Americans think and live. Discover Portland‘s new approach to city planning involving its citizens. Visit non-profit organizations that seek to integrate economic and community development strategies. Lectures, discussions and seminars will provide in-depth information on themes such as the American Dream, local history, international and intercultural issues. You will learn about politics as well as about the different aspects of American society and culture. How does Portland accomplish an atmosphere of multicultural acceptance? Portland is seen as a future model for green US city planning. Talk to people involved in this interesting process. Excursion to relevant institutions and sites will complement the theoretical knowledge. They will take the participants for instance to a local high school, the magnificent Oregon coast and a homeless shelter where they will serve food. The program will give you a comprehensive introduction into the diversity of North America and will give you an idea, why it is that Portland is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in the USA.

As part of the program you will also share the life of an American family which gives you ample opportunity to draw your own picture of the American lifestyle.
