Together We Rise: Immigrants in America presents the powerful photographic work of American photographer Mark Tuschman, who for many years has accompanied people seeking safety, economic stability, and a fresh start in the United States. His images give a voice to those whose stories often remain unseen—the immigrants who, despite poverty, hard work, and structural barriers, believe in the American Dream.
Tuschman shows how migration is closely linked to economic pressure and the lack of opportunity in one’s country of origin. Many of his 160 subjects leave their countries of origin out of necessity, yet also with remarkable hope: the desire to build a better life through work and determination. The exhibition draws attention to this reality—to people working in agriculture, caregiving, industry, research, and numerous other sectors, thereby helping sustain the economic foundation of America.
In these photographs, America appears both as a land of hope and as a place of struggle. Tuschman’s images point to the obstacles migrants face daily, but also to their creativity, courage, and ability to reshape communities. The “We” in the exhibition’s title underscores that social progress in the United States is inseparable from the contributions of immigrants.
Aesthetically, Tuschman combines documentary clarity with great visual sensitivity. His compositions are precise, often understated, yet carried by an emotional depth that creates closeness without idealizing. Light, color, and visual direction guide attention respectfully to the people in the images, opening a space for empathy and reflection.
Together We Rise invites viewers to consider migration not only as a social challenge but also as a source of human strength, deep connection, economic vitality and societal renewal.
