Dancing to Connect

Ein Tanzprojekt für Schulen

About the project

Dancing to Connect is an intercultural dance project by the New York dance ensemble  Battery Dance Company. The project offers 120 pupils the chance to learn the fundamentals of dancing and develop their own choreographies – all with the help of professional dancers from New York City. The project concludes with a closing performance where the students can present their achievements.

"Battery Dance“-founder and creative director is Jonathan Hollander who was awarded with the Bundesverdienstkreuz. The main goal of his project is to foster empathy and tolerance as well as integrate youths with a migration background or those who have sought refuge.

In Tübingen

In total, 5 Tübinger schools with about 20-25 pupil (age: 14+) each can participate in the project.

Sadly, we were unable to execute the project within its original time frame (July 20 – July 26 2020) due to Covid-19 policies. We plan for the project to take place at a later time.

The d.a.i. Tübingen

  • Organizes the execution of the project as well as the closing performance in Tübingen
  • Looks after the dancer and connects them with the schools
  • Covers the costs of the project in cooperation with the Transatlantik-Programm der Bundesrepublik Deutschland

The pupils

  • Improve their English skills through the contact to the international artists
  • Learn creativity and discipline through the development and study of their own choreographies during this workshop which lasts several days
  • Foster intercultural friendships with teenagers from different schools and different backgrounds
  • Gain self-confidence through the public closing performance as well as the acquisition of the participation certificate
  • Develop body consciousness, learn fundamentals of dancing, and get professional input from New York City’s dance teachers

The participating schools

  • Provide the groups of 20-25 pupils (age: 14+) as well as the practice room in their school
  • Decide the time frame of the project for their school
  • Provide a spokesperson for the coordination and supervise the execution of the workshop in their school
