Thrillers: Conspiracy & Crime "Chris Mullin, A Very British Coup (1982, Film: 2012)"

The modern idea of conspiracy as we know it today stems from the assassination of JFK, the first Pop president, whose violent death divided the national psyche between the life of politics and the life of myth.
This quarter we would like to explore political conspiracy thrillers that may be said to contain more literal and figurative truth than we like to suppose. Popular myths are not merely deliberate falsehoods, but rather grow out of the Zeitgeist to explain things we don’t fully understand, like gaps in the official version of events. The lack of conclusive evidence is very suggestive to writers who imagine connections between conspiracy and class interest. In the official mythology of American politics, there are “lone nuts” and madmen, but no such things as a coup d’état or putsch.
