U.S. Sanctuary Cities: Protecting Immigration and Asylum Rights
Talk by Prof. Joyce Mushaben, University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, Emma Lazarus’s poem, “the New Colossus,” depicted New York harbor as a golden door open to “huddled masses yearning to be free,” an image with deep historical roots. Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the United States has significantly slowed the flow of refugees fleeing war and persecution around the world. Invoking the dark, scary image of Gotham, a city rife with crime, corruption and violence, Donald Trump tried to ban “Muslims”, then ordered a round-up of undocumented migrants, declaring both groups a threat to national security. American cities known for their “welcoming cultures” have become the first line of defense against this unprecedented assault on the American Dream. Joyce Mushaben will explore the political, economic and constitutional tensions inherent in recent White House efforts to crack down on “sanctuary cities,” based on the experiences of Midwestern cities.
