Idioms, Expressions, and Puns (B1-C2): The imagination of English

Have you ever felt the cat had got your tongue? Let’s talk shop about English expressions and idioms. Language is a way to explain the world around us, and we’ll examine how the environment influences language. Using our imaginations, we can decode some of the more difficult expressions. Learning to imagine in English should help us think in English too!

Adverbs (B1-C1): "To boldly learn what no man has learned before."

What are adverbs? This crash course will briefly but thoroughly review the basic grammar involving adverbs. In addition, a comparison between adverbs and adjectives will be made in order to help us identify common mistakes and clarify the rules.

The evening will kick off in the d.a.i. and end at a local venue - the first drink is on the house!

Kurs abgeschlossen Ausfall: NEW! Academic Writing Workshop (17/1-F07)

This one-day workshop is designed especially for doctoral students and academic staff who have papers they want to present at international conferences or publish in English-language journals. Participants will be required to submit a draft paper one week before the workshop. In the workshop, we will discuss how English academic papers are structured (especially in contrast to German papers), what English-language audiences expect, and linguistic aspects such as sentence structure and wording. Using the principles discussed in the workshop, participants will edit their own papers and have plenty of opportunities to ask the instructor questions.

Instructor qualifications: Dr. Kelly Neudorfer received her doctorate in political science in 2014. She has published her work in international journals and with a U.S. academic publisher and has presented at international conferences. Since 2010 she has worked as an academic translator, helping German researchers get their works published for an international audience.
