  • Earth Day: Black Forest Meets Yosemite

    Donnerstag, 22.04.2021 - 19:00 Uhr

A Conversation with Shelton Johnson, Yosemite National Park & Dr. Simone Stübner, Nationalpark Schwarzwald | As part of the series "EUREKA! Ländle Meets California," a digital event series on the sister state partnership between Baden-Württemberg and California.

In the course of a worldwide upswing of environmental protection activism, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson established "Earth Day" on April 22, 1970. It is now celebrated annually by people in more than 150 countries, drawing attention to regional, national and international environmental projects. While national parks have been established as such environmental projects in the US since the end of the 19th century, the concept was not implemented in Germany until the 1970s. What are representatives of the different park traditions able to share with each other?

How do such professionals evaluate the interplay between tourism and conservation in their national parks? In this online event, we invite you to a transatlantic dialogue between a top ranger of "Yosemite National Park," established in 1890, and a senior staff member of the Black Forest National Park, established in 2014. Shelton Johnson, a ranger at "Yosemite National Park" since 1994, is particularly committed to introducing the African-American population to national parks and a connection to nature. He will be talking with Simone Stübner, the head of public relations at the Black Forest National Park. She visited "Yosemite National Park" as part of an exchange program for German rangers, which deeply impressed and inspired her. The conversation will be moderated by Allison Wildman, Coordinator for Governance and Social Innovation at ICLEI Freiburg.

About the series:

Eureka! Ländle Meets California is a digital event series on the sister state partnership between Baden-Württemberg and California. In monthly events, we will explore what our two states have in common, what we can learn from each other and how we can work together more closely. American and German experts on both sides of the Atlantic will discuss topics such as environment, higher education, tech startups, national parks, migration, queer culture, and the film industry. We want to initiate conversations that create new ideas and networking opportunities to further strengthen the partnership between California and Baden-Württemberg going forward. The series is organized by the DAZ Stuttgart in cooperation with the German-American Institutes in Freiburg, Heidelberg, and Tübingen, and with generous support of the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg. The sister state agreement was signed by Governor Jerry Brown and Minister President Winfried Kretschmann at a global climate summit in San Francisco in 2018.
