Current Equity Thinking and Practices from the U.S. West Coast

Talk with Bill Flood, community cultural development consultant from Portland, Oregon. Bill Flood shares current West Coast thought and practice concerning equity. Currently, our thinking is moving from diversity (acknowledging differences) to inclusion (engaging people in programs, services, decision-making) to equity (acknowledging dynamics of power and privilege and taking action to share power). Long overdue in the U.S., this movement is a major topic in most  cities on the West and East coast. Bill Flood will illustrate concepts with examples from government, private non-profit organizations and community groups. Cities are adopting equity plans and policies to ensure that services are accessible to all people. Non-profit organizations are developing strategies to be more inclusive and to address long-standing issues of racism and white supremacy. Underlying this work/movement is the need for European-Americans to understand the power and privilege that people carry and what people can do to make a difference.
