Wine tasting with Hiram Simon, California Wine Importer. America may be the epitome of a "New World" wine producing country, but the unbroken history of the vine there stretches back to Missionary Times. President Thomas Jefferson, a famous oenophile, established a wine estate at Monticello, Virginia in 1807. Today, vineyards are found in all states except for Alaska. But the most important wines come from California, Oregon and Washington, with New York (and now some others) producing impressive efforts, too. This tasting will present eight exemplary and varied wines from the three West Coast states, highlighting their dominant varieties and regions.
Starting his wine career at The Wine Society, a famous British wine institution, Hiram Simon has lived in Berkeley, California since 1982. His company, WineWise, started importing European wines in 1989, which are sold throughout the state. He has for many years divided his time between Berkeley and Tübingen, where his family lives, and has got to know many of the best Californian producers personally over the years.
