  • Swallowing the Sun of Poetry: A Reading by and with short story author and poet Sudesh Mishra

    Mittwoch, 22.01.2025 - 19:00 Uhr

In winter 2024/25, Sudeh Mishra is visiting the University of Tübingen as a New Horizons Fellow. Sudesh Mishra is not only a scholar – namely, Professor of Literature at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji –, but also a writer, more precisely a poet, playwright and short story writer; he was born in Suva in 1962 and educated in Fiji and Australia. He holds a PhD from Flinders University and has been honoured with an ARC Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Harri Jones Memorial Prize for Poetry (for his first book) and an Asialink residency at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi.  He is also a recipient of the Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara Fellowship at Otago University, Dunedin, and the Erskine Fellowship at Canterbury University in Christchurch. His works have been published in many anthologies, including The Bloodaxe Book of Contemporary Indian Poetry, The Penguin Book of Indian Poets, Contemporary Australian Poetry, Concert of Voices: An Anthology of World Writing in English, and Nuanua: Pacific Writing in English since 1980, to name a few. Sudesh has published five books of poetry, including The Lives of Coat Hangers (2016) and Diaspora and the Difficult Art of Dying (2002), both with Otago University Press.

We would like to welcome Sudesh not only as a scholar to the city of Tübingen, but also – against the backdrop of the efforts to build research relationships in the field of artistic research and the Hölderlinturm for creative education – to introduce him and his poetry to a German audience.  With this in mind, the College of Fellows is organising a reading of his poetry in collaboration with the Hölderlinturm, the ‘Critical Proximities’ cluster initiative and the SLT on 22 January at 7 pm. All interested parties are cordially invited, admission is free; the event will be held in English. Sudesh has a new poem on Hölderlin-Celan he has promised to share.

On the afternoon before the reading, from 3-5 pm, there will be a creative writing workshop at the College of Fellows’ seminar room (Villa Köstlin, Rümelinstr. 27), centred around a discussion of what poet's do with language to invent the world anew. All those interested, especially students and other people who write themselves, are cordially invited to attend.
