Lecture-Recital-Concert with American Pianist Eric McElroy and violinist Joe Chu-Yu Yang. In this program, violinist Joe Chu-Yu Yang and pianist Eric McElroy explore the diverse influence of jazz, ragtime, and popular culture on the classical music of American 20th and 21st century music. As music shifts and transforms within its broader cultural context, each composition will be introduced with spoken commentary that illustrates the cultural and social implications of jazz and classical music interacting.
Eric McElroy is an American pianist, composer, and teacher. He won the Music Teacher Association Composition Competition, one of the most prestigious competitions for young composers in the United States. McElroy teaches piano performance at Oxford's Dragon School and completed his doctoral studies at the University of Oxford.
Joe Chu-Yu Yang was born in Taiwan and enjoys an active and diverse career as a performer, researcher, and teacher. As an orchestral musician, he most recently performed with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
