  • Ending the War in Us: A Social History of Modern Wars

    Donnerstag, 09.02.2023 - 19:15 Uhr - 21:00 Uhr

Talk with Michael Luick-Thrams, University of Erfurt. When does a war end? Does it ever end? If so, when and how? German history is inextricably linked to cycles of wars that have left deep traces in German culture that are indelible and still affect us, even if in invisible ways. War always interrupts biographies, shatters dreams, and leaves deep scars that take generations to heal — or not. How can we who live here today learn and grow from our collective historical inheritance?

Iowa-born historian Michael Luick-Thrams, director of the “House of Traces” and project manager for social history at the University of Erfurt, has been studying these questions for decades. In spring 2023, he will present his findings, attempting to navigate the layers of the complex, nuanced process of finally ending a war. With his “History Mobile”, Dr. Luick-Thrams and his students travel through rural and urban communities, interview contemporary witnesses, collect documents and talk to interested people of all ages. The focus is always on personal experiences and their significance for the present.
