In the school year 2011-2012 we organized two English Theater Groups for high school students from Tübingen and the surrounding area. Both groups worked with director, actor, and language instructor James Nelson (Kansas City, MO) in different ways – yet, continuously in English. On the path towards the big final performance the learning language became, with lots of fun, the working language. The high school students of Tübingen’s Uhland Gymnasium worked on the piece "Search for the Lino Bear". The fairytale comedy is a play written by Nelson himself, which was expanded and rewritten in the group during rehearsals. For the 10th graders the drama teacher Sylvia Langer, the project offered the unique opportunity of an English-language production. The end result was a fantastic, English-speaking performance, in which everyone involved was super confident, committed and obviously having a lot of fun. Check out our photo gallery!
The other collective that Nelson supervised was an Improv Theater Group, consisting of fifteen high school students (Grade 10-12) from different schools from the area. At the end of the program the students performed a big improv show. The audience was visibly impressed by the abilities of the young actors, who responded promptly in English to suggestions by audience members with a lot of verve. Check out our photo gallery to get an idea. These short performance exercises are also a fun language learning tool for other groups.
This project was a supporting measure to promote cultural education and intercultural learning. It was generously supported by the Foundation for Cultural Youth Work of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports in Baden-Württemberg and by the Youth and Senior Citizens Foundation of the Kreissparkasse Tübingen.
