About the High School Exchange in 2013/14

In the school year 2013/14 the class 9c of the  Albert-Schweitzer-Realschule/Gemeinschaftsschule West Tübingen and students from the Academy for Technology & the Classics Santa Fe, New Mexico participated in a project for high school and college students in Germany and the USA that went far beyond the traditional objectives of regular school exchanges.

Senior Ambassadors

Hi, my name is Ursula. I’m studying English and biology to become a teacher at the university of Würzburg. Currently, I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, because I applied for a year abroad, and fortunately have been chosen.
When I heard about the program “Ambassadors in Sneakers” of the German-American institute for the first time, I was immediately interested in. Not only the fact that it was an opportunity to work with students again but also that a school from Mexico gets the possibility to do a trip to Germany was really exciting for me. With “Ambassadors in Sneakers”, you get the opportunity to overcome cultural bias of your native land and you can give the students an understanding of your culture and its customs. As an exchange student, I know exactly what it feels like to be in a foreign country without your family for a longer period of time. For this reason, I want to share my experiences with the students. I commit myself to the intercultural exchange because I stand wholeheartedly behind this project and am firmly convinced that stereotypes can be overcome and transnational friendships can be established.

I am Doro and I’m studying psychology in Würzburg (Bavaria). Currently, I’m doing my second semester abroad at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, USA. Once, I have also participated in an intercultural training in Germany and was very excited about it. It is a great opportunity to get first impressions of an alien country and of its culture and people. The main purpose of such a training is to clear up existing stereotypes an wrong ideas. I think it’s great to get the opportunity to get a different view, and to provide the students of a high school in Santa Fe with insights of my home country. It is so much fun and interesting to hear how the American students imagine Germany, and what they expect from their time abroad. With this project, we try to make the students familiar with Germany, take away their nervousness and prepare them for their big and exciting trip in the best way possible…speaking German works already pretty well.

My name is Katrin and I’m studying in Albuquerque, New Mexico with the help of the 30th parliamentary sponsorship-program. I think it is a great opportunity to participate in a project such as “Ambassadors in Sneakers”. As an exchange student I know how it feels to be in a foreign country and I was really glad to share my own impressions and experiences. I also enjoyed sharing my knowledge about the German language, customs, and culture and I hope that we could take away some of their fears. Nowadays, an intercultural exchange is very important. Due to the internet, the world gets smaller and to a certain extent, it demands for a cultural adaption. Furthermore, it is really interesting to get to know more about another country. That’s how you learn something about yourself as well and become aware of your own origin. It was so much fun working together with the team on this project and to bring Germany and the USA closer together.

I am Lisa, student of politics from Bonn, and I’m studying one year abroad in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Since I live her, I realized how different Americans are, and how the people and the country frequently surprise me. “Ambassadors in Sneakers” is so much fun and is a great opportunity to convey a personal image of Germany in a group of young people, and to reflect about what is new, different, unexpected, special, and similar- on both sides. In addition, the work and organization within the group with the other “ambassadors,” the cooperation with the school as well as the visits in the classes in Santa Fe are exciting, funny, and informative. Those who get the chance to participate should definitely grab the chance!
