The origin of the Amerika-Häuser started right after the end of World War II, as the U.S. Military Government opened a number of Information Centers and Reading Rooms to counter 12 years of Nazi propaganda.

They were instructed to "help lay the economic and educational foundation for a healthy German democracy", which in practice meant offering libraries with a wide range of American literature, newspapers and magazines, as well as films, concerts, lectures, and English classes - everything for free.

The concept was a huge success, especially among young people who were extremely attracted to the "American Way of Life".

During the years of the Cold War, more than 40 Amerika-Häuser were supposed to communicate ideology and even propaganda as so-called means of soft power.

Today, however, the 12 binational German-American Institutes are independent of direct political influence.

Besides exploring the history of the Tübingen institute, our leading questions are: What is the nature of culture and education, democracy and freedom in a capitalist global economy? What have Germans learned from Americans since WWII? And - have Americans learned anything from Germans?

“wonder is the mother of all science.”
- John Dewey, How We Think

This summer’s LitCon will focus on the central theme of: what is education? We will discuss three important works that help us to question and reexamine the role and essence of education in our lives. “How We Think” is a work which questioned and helped revolutionize the American education system in the 1930s. “A Lesson Before Dying” is a beautiful account of the role of an educator in a community hard hit by racial injustice. And lastly, we will dip into Dai Sijie’s enchanting novel, “Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress”, which depicts the magic of reading as a gateway to wonder and learning.
Once a month, participants will be invited to come together to discuss these books and reflect on their reading journey. Guiding questions will begin the discussions with a focus on the above-mentioned theme. Come join us for an interesting literary evening in which we will suspend preconceptions, ask questions, and listen for deeper understanding.

Juli: Dai Sijie, “Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress”

NOTE: You do not have to commit to all three books. You can also choose to only sign up for one. Please call the Sekretariat to let them know.
