  • Become a Citizen Diplomat

The d.a.i. is always looking for volunteers for the program “Rent an American.” The service-learning program focuses on citizen diplomacy and global citizenship. The Center for Citizen Diplomacy defines citizen diplomacy as follows: "Citizen Diplomacy is the idea that individuals have the right and responsibility to help shape U.S. foreign relations through person-to-person interactions with citizens of other countries."

Participants, whom we call affectionately "rentees," visit schools in the administrative district of Tuebingen, which can lead them to areas outside the Neckar-Alb region (Tübingen/Reutlingen), e.g. to the Swabian Alps or Lake Constance. You will have conversations about everyday life, your heritage, U.S. history, and culture. “Rent an American” is a fun, low-threshold activity that will help you improve your intercultural communication skills, challenge your views on transatlantic relations and global understanding, and break down stereotypes. A bonus: You get to see areas of Baden-Württemberg that you might not visit otherwise. Volunteers who are enrolled at the University of Tuebingen or the University of Hohenheim can earn credits.

I really enjoyed the activities where I got to interact with the students. There was a Q&A session in the beginning where the students prepared questions for me on a topic assigned to their group. As I was answering the questions, I bounced the questions back to them and I think the conversation was very engaging and we exchanged the different cultural practices between America and Germany.

All new participants will attend orientation, a day-long workshop that will cover cross-cultural communication specifics between Germans and Americans. You will learn more about the organizational procedures of the program (matching process, reimbursement of travel expenses, etc.) During orientation, you can connect with other Americans, who live in the area. There is also free pizza and soft drinks! The next orientation is on Saturday, October 28 from 10 am to 4 pm.
